The advantages of a roof tent are its ability to remain clean, dry, provide luxury, comfort and stay off the ground in a convenient and easy way.
These are just some of the biggest advantages that roof top tents (RTT) offer to campers. There is much more to point out, some obvious and others not so obvious to a beginner.

Some key Advantages of camping with a roof tent:

Set-up speed:

For some this may be one of the key advantages as some models of hardshell tents can be opened or closed in perhaps a few seconds of real time. You can easily camp wherever you want to park whether it is for vacation or business trips. Some RTT <grow> faster than others. For example, folding(retractable) softshell RTTs require you to remove the PVC cover and undo the straps before use. Depending on the model, it can take up to 5 minutes to open.

Cleanliness:

The roof tent never touches the ground. For those who have camped in a ground tent, you know how quickly the tent will get dirty. An even worse scenario is when it rains and the ground gets muddy.
With an RTT you don’t have to worry about these issues as it doesn’t sit on the ground. When you enter the tent, you can place your shoes inside a waterproof shoe bag located just outside the entrance.
You also won’t have to rinse or clean the RTT after a muddy camping trip like you would for a ground tent.

Comfort:

The comfort in an RTT is unparalleled. The biggest difference is simply that it has a flat surface for sleeping. When you are in a ground tent, even with a nice mattress , the uneven ground surface makes it very uncomfortable.
This is especially true if you go on an extended camping trip for a few days at a time. The built-in layer that RTTs have will usually be about 5-7cm thick and made of high density foam. The mattress is quite comfortable.
Also being able to skip the process of bedding is a great time saver.
Most RTTs, especially hard shells, allow you to keep bedding stored inside the tent when they are closed. This means that pillows, sheets and blankets can be ready for use inside the tent without having to take them out after each use.
Apart from the fact that this will save you huge amounts of time, as well as the fact that you won’t forget anything as you rush out of the house for your next camping trip, a big advantage is also the space saving especially the hard shells that can be used as a carry case!

In addition to the tent material, which forms the canvas of the tent and provides protection, roof tents have other components such as frames that give it structure and support the tent when it is opened.

They provide much better insulation than ground tents (due to the floor and hard-shell).

They provide greater security

Ceiling tents are nothing new, they have been around since the 1940s. They have been used for different purposes in different places in the world. In Africa they sleep on the roof to protect themselves from predators, in Australia they sleep in roof tents to protect themselves from spiders and snakes.

With roof tents we can travel anywhere, access places where large caravans cannot. With camping we learn to love and protect the environment for ourselves and future generations.

Some key features:

Roof tents (RTT), like any other tent, are made of different materials to suit different camping needs. The materials your tent is made from determine many characteristics, from the weight of your tent to its suitability for the season.
Some fabrics from which ceiling tents are made include:
Cotton:
Made from 100% cotton fabrics they are < breathable> and abrasion resistant. They allow air to pass through, so campers may need extra insulation for cold and windy days. The heavier the cotton fabric used, the heavier the tent and the less breathable it is. Although cotton tents are very durable, they are difficult to dry after they get wet. They absorb moisture easily, making them difficult to use in the rain. Overall, cotton tents are ideal for summer camping.
Polyester:
Polyester tents are lightweight, flexible and of course water resistant. They are tear-resistant and easy to dry, making them a great choice for all seasons. Despite all the other advantages, polyester tents are not breathable and suffer from abrasion.
Polyester has many different fabric thicknesses – which is determined by Denier or Thread Count. The higher the Denier number, the better the quality, the more durable a tent will be. Family tents tend to be made of 70 Denier or 150 Denier, as this fabric is lightweight, but still sturdy enough to handle most weather conditions found in camping. The thicker fabrics tend to be used in Elite Family tents, camper tents as these products are used more during the camping season, which means they need to be more robust.
70 Denier – a basic fabric ideal for summer camping.
150 Denier – a mid-level fabric ideal for camping a little later in the season.
420 Denier – found in Elite awnings and tents – heavy, durable fabric
Double Ripstop – a heavy and durable fabric.
Ideal fabric for camping with frequent movements.
Ideal for first time campers.
Ideal for transportation as it is lighter in weight.
It works well in all weather conditions.
Ideal for the camper who goes a few times a year and uses the tent no more than three to four weeks a year.
Poly-cotton:
Polycotton tents are made with a mixture of cotton and polyester fibres. This makes them share the features of both fibers, making them definitely the best tent choice that any camper can invest in. The main advantage of Polycotton is its ability to adapt to different climates. Cotton works well in colder weather as it retains heat, and also works well in hot conditions as the fabric breathes and stays cooler than polyester.
It is ideal for extended camping trips as the fabric does not deteriorate as quickly as polyester fabric. It is more UV Degradation resistant – Ideal for outdoor trips where the sun is stronger. UV radiation is the number one factor in damaging a tent, fading and fabric deterioration . Polycotton can last longer than polyester in these climates. It is much more durable than polyester and can withstand higher wind speeds than polyester.
The great strength of Polycotton is also its ability to remain quieter in windy conditions – the fabric does not make the same loud noise that polyester makes in the wind.

Ideal fabric for those who camp in warmer conditions
Those who camp many times during the season.
Those who camp for long periods of time.

Nylon:
Nylon tents are a cheaper alternative to cotton and polyester tents. They are durable to the outdoor elements and abrasion resistant. Nylon tents are lightweight and flexible, making them easy to transport and <set up>. They are water resistant, dry quickly after rain and can be chemically treated to make them UV resistant.

A few words about the roof tents:

Movement: Excellent for road travel. The perfect road adventure if you’re moving from place to place. Camp wherever your vehicle can go. Top choice for people who go on frequent weekend trips, surfers moving from beach to beach, 4×4 enthusiasts and those looking for a little adventure and fun.
Quick and easy installation: park and your tent can be set up in minutes. Just a few minutes more if you have an optional extension room annex.
Comfort: sleep on a luxurious double mattress off the ground for a great night’s sleep. And leave the bedding in the tent when you pack up.
Durability :Made of tougher and more weather-resistant materials (such as canvas, steel and aluminium plate) compared to ground tents which often focus on being lightweight and portable.
Distance from the ground : Like camping in a tree house – no mud or flooding, better insulation and ventilation.
Panoramic view.
Frees up storage space in the vehicle – having the tent on the roof means you have more space in your vehicle for other equipment.
Safety – from the ground makes things less accessible to animals and people.
Cheaper than an RV – enjoy some of the comforts and mobility of an RV on a budget in places where large RVs can’t head.

The roof tents can be fitted to any car as long as the appropriate type of bars are fitted. They can withstand a weight of 300-350kgr.There are two basic types of roof tents : Hardshell (polyester shell) and Softshell (without polyester shell).
